Flute Serial Numbers

Founded in 1939, by Donald Artley in Elkhart, Indiana, Artley became well known for high quality affordable woodwinds. We keep a record of serial numbers and are quickly able to tell them all we know about the flute. If we can’t help get your Muramatsu rescued, we’ll help get it replaced. We can work with your insurance company.

My favorite tech tells me that he has a Haynes flute with plateau keys and the following description: 'Drawn tone hole, offset G, C foot. Sterling throughout. No model number on flute'. He didn't provide the serial number in his email but I have asked and I know that I can determine the year in which it was made from that information.
But is there a way to determine the model? Maybe the absence of a model number is a clue in itself, similar to vintage Buffet R13 clarinets bearing no model number (just wondering).
All suggestions welcome.

Using serial numbers to identify the exact production dates of Reynolds instruments is inherently inaccurate given the lack of published records to corroborate with. Except for a fragment of Reynolds’ production data from 1964-1979 that is preserved in the Allied Band Supply catalog, I am not aware of any surviving official serial number records for Reynolds brass instruments.

Flute

I have a Haynes commercial model sterling silver flute, serial number 35008 which was completely overhauled a month ago. The flute is a C-foot model. I need to provide the insurance company with an es. Yamaha Flute. Serial Number: 281x Manufacturer: Yamaha Model: 681H Instrument Construction: Sterling silver construction throughout results in unmatched tone and response. Tapered pivot screws allow for accurate adjustment and smooth action. Features: Low B gizmo key, solid silver EC cut headjoint and an in-line G.

As such, the serial number lists compiled below have been based on the visual observation of engraving patterns and other instrument details that I’ve cross-referenced against catalog illustrations and other available historical information. I believe that, while exact dates may never be able to be accurately verified for a specific serial number, the general progression of these lists is defensible and represents Reynolds instruments through the company’s history.

The issue I'm having is trying to figure out manufacture dates based on the Conn-Selmer serial number formula (prefix number plus 50). I've been quoted two prefix numbers, 60 and 70, from people selling flutes and am wondering how to determine the manufacture date. Serial numbers do not appear before mid-1854 as shown by a flute without serial number in an original case dated June 19, 1854 (Bigio p. The first gold flute was made in 1856 and a gold flute number I.E. (40) is mentioned in Bigio p. 3 which may be the first, or nearly the first, gold flute. Has anyone ever seen a serial number chart for pearl flutes, or know any other way to determine the age? Leer Right now, only the factory has the serial # History.

This primary Reynolds serial number sequence dates from 1936-1979 and includes all Reynolds instruments with the following exceptions:

  • Any instrument marked “Made by Ohio Band Instrument Co.” (includes Regent, Roth, Paramount, etc.)
  • All Roth model instruments (including those marked “made by F.A. Reynolds” or “made by Roth-Reynolds”). All other model instruments marked “made by Roth-Reynolds” are included in the serial number table on this page.
  • All Medalist instruments made between 1961 and 1964 (SNs below 200000).

For these exceptions, please see the “Ohio Band” serial number list.

Go ahead and hit B to open up your Brush Palette, and click ClayBuildup. Now this brush is kind of chunky, kind of rough, kind of blocky.
