J Unertl Scope Serial Numbers

Mounted on the rifle is a J. Unertl 12x scope with aluminum scope mounts. The scope serial number is 39282. The scope is in excellent used condition with the normal wear to the finish; as seen in the photos. Remington model 700 serial number decoder. The scope has threaded caps on both ends and a crosshair reticle. I purchased a Unertl scope and I'm curious as to when it was made? S/N 8739 and it still has the J Unertl in one line and the serial number on the second line, no company logo. Markings: The left side of the frame is marked with the serial number and the Winchester Proof. The rear base is marked 'J. The rear base is marked 'J. The scope is marked with '4', 'J. UNERTL / OPT CO.' Joe Miller, I believe, on the Unertl Yahoo Group maintains a listing of known Unertl scope serial numbers in numerical order. Really like these old scopes and have them mounted on my Winchester 52Ds. First thing to remember is if you are going to make adjustments to the objective lens (the one in front) ALWAYS loosen the lock ring which is located just behind the lens cap.
In order to focus the crosshairs, loosen the ocular lens (the one in the rear) lock ring. It is the ring that butts up against the ocular lens housing, not the ring farther up with the power stamped on it. Point the scope towards a distant blank wall and rotate the ocular lens housing until the crosshairs are focused to your eyes. Tighten the lock ring to maintain that focus. The ring with the power stamped on it carries the cross hairs which is normally factory adjusted and left in position.
Your scope is externally adjustable for both windage and elevation. Move it in the direction that you want your groups to go.
You can email Lyman and request an instruction pamphlet. They no longer carry the original printed pamphlets but will make a copy and mail it to you.
Cannot determine the date of manufacture from the serial number however from the four digits would guess that it is an earlier scope. Believe these scopes were introduced in the '40's and produced into the '60's.
