JumpStart Adventures 4th Grade: Haunted Island is a JumpStart game that was made by Knowledge Adventure in 1996. As the title suggests, the game is intended to teach a fourth grade curriculum. It was later replaced by JumpStart Adventures 4th Grade: Sapphire Falls in 2000.

In its original release, it contained KnowledgeLand as a bonus disc.

Story and Gameplay

In this game, the player is a fourth-grade student who was absent from school one day. On that day, the rest of the player's class had a substitute teacher who turned out to be a witch named Ms. Grunkle. She transformed the player's classmates into monsters, whisked them away to her Haunted Island, and locked them up in the attic of her house.

After the player is transported to Haunted Island, they meet a bat named Flap, who becomes the player's friend and guide, and a fortune teller named Madame Pomreeda, who can restore the player's classmates, if the player can collect each student's most prized possessions by completing quests around the island. Madame Pomreeda will give the player Challenge Cards that each require the player to complete two activities somewhere on the island. When both activities have been completed, one of the student's prized possessions will appear. Each classmate has four prized possessions, and when all four are obtained, Madame Pomreeda will be able to transform the classmate back to normal by reciting a special spell.

The player has a limited amount of health, which is indicated by a candle in the upper left hand corner of the screen. While navigating the island, the player may be confronted by Ms. Grunkle's ghostly minion, Repsac, whose riddles must be answered correctly to avoid losing health. Each time the player loses some health, the candle burns down more, and if the candle burns out, the player is cast into the island's labyrinth, which they must then navigate their way out of. The labyrinth also contains a 'fountain of health' that will allow the player to restore their health if they can answer some riddles correctly.

The player earns points during activities by correctly solving problems at the various locations around the island. For every five thousand points earned, the player receives one of 25 keys to Ms. Grunkle's house. Ms. Grunkle's house has five rooms, each with a door covered by five locks, thus requiring five keys to open. Whenever a room is entered for the first time, Ms. Grunkle will appear and cast the player into the labyrinth. Once the player advances all the way through her house and makes it into her attic, where the rest of the class is locked up, the game is completed. However, if some of the kids are still monsters when the player reaches that attic, Flap informs the player they will have to be changed back before the attic can be entered.

Opening

At the beginning of the opening, the schoolhouse is shown. The atmosphere is pleasant, and two bluebirds fly around the school. Suddenly, lightning flashes. The schoolhouse and the fence take on a twisted shape, and the bluebirds turn into bats.

Inside the schoolhouse, the substitute teacher named Ms. Grunkle, who is really a witch, casts a spell on all of the frightened fourth grade students, turning them all into monsters. Then Ms. Grunkle flies away on her broomstick back to her house at the Haunted Island. Along the way, she drops the skeleton keys to her home and her magic wand by Madame Pomreeda's carriage.

Ending

Once the player enters the attic, Ms. Grunkle attempts to transform all the students back into monsters, along with the player.

However, the player produces Ms. Grunkle's magic wand, which protects the kids from the spell. Ms. Grunkle is temporarily shocked that the user has acquired her wand, but then realizes that Madame Pomreeda must be responsible.

With that, Ms. Grunkle acknowledges defeat and flies out the window on her broom. A piece of paper she leaves behind on the floor reveals the schoolhouse being restored to its original state.

Characters

Main

  • Ms. Grunkle (witch)
  • Flap (bat)
  • Madame Pomreeda (fortune teller)
  • Repsac (ghost)

The Kids

Main article: The Kids

These are the player's thirteen classmates who were transformed into ghastly monsters when Ms. Grunkle cast spells on them. They return into human form once the player solves the riddles and challenges which then break the previous spells. The yearbook has pictures of each student in either their monster or human form, depending on whether the player has freed them from their spell yet.

Minor Characters

  • Graveyard Ghost - The glowing soul who is released from his grave every time the player fills the Mad Libs style inscriptions that appears on his tombstone, which he then narrates.
  • Grim Reaper - The unseen character who is mentioned a lot by the graveyard ghost. If the player doesn't complete the tombstone in time to save three souls as Madame Pomreeda requests, he'll be on his way to invade the cemetery.
  • Frog/Red-Headed Prince - A prince who has been turned into a frog by Ms. Grunkle. At the Enchanted Forest, the player has to make a potion to save him, or else Ms. Grunkle will make the situation worse. When the potion is completed three times, the frog transforms back into a prince.
  • Bugs - These critters appear in The Spider Web, and are controlled by Ms. Grunkle. The player gets to spell a word by guiding a spider through each part of the web one by one using the arrow keys on the keyboard to control its movement. Apparently Madame Pomreeda thinks of these bugs as cute, which the bugs themselves disagree with.
  • Semimoto - A monster who lives in the Clock Tower. He plays an organ, but has difficulty doing so with all of the bats in the belfry.
  • Other Jumpstart characters - Several characters from other JumpStart games make cameo appearances in the woods. They can't be interacted with. These characters include:

Trivia

  • Users must play a minimum of 104 activities in order to win the game, as a minimum of two different activities must be played for each of the fifty-two cards must be played for each of the thirteen children.
  • Curiously, Ms. Grunkle is sometimes referred to as 'Mrs. Grunkle,' prompting one to wonder whatever became of her husband. In her living room is a skeleton who sits around watching the television while holding a remote, which some fans have speculated may have been her husband at one point.
  • When Joe gets turned into a monster in the opening cutscene, it shows Stanley's monster silhouette.

Development[edit]

Though the game itself has never been significantly updated (beyond the addition of a printable workbook and assessment test when the game was released with new packaging in July 27, 1998), it has been repackaged several times; once with the addition of the Adventure Challenge (later called Extreme Field Trips) bonus disc (circa 2000), once as JumpStart Advanced 5th & 6th Grade (together with Extreme Field Trips and JumpStart Adventures 6th Grade: Mission Earthquest) in 2003, and once more in 2007 as JumpStart Advanced 4th-6th Grade School Essentials (Together with JumpStart Adventures 4th Grade: Sapphire Falls, JumpStart Adventures 6th Grade: Mission Earthquest, Math & Science Challenge, and Language Arts Challenge).[1]

Plot[edit]

JumpStart Adventures 5th Grade: Jo Hammet, Kid Detective covers curricula subjects such as art history, geography, math, language, science, and US History. Throughout the course of the game, which is set in the fictional city of Hooverville, the user must (while playing the role of a female, fifth grade detective by the name of Jo Hammet) thwart the schemes of the evil Dr. X, who is planning to destroy factories and power plants to get revenge on them for cutting his researchfunding.

Games[edit]

The Hooverville Museum of Art and Geography[edit]

The game is divided in a series of six missions, each corresponding to a different sabotaged site. Each mission begins at the Hooverville Museum of Art and Geography. Here, a talking lab rat named B.F. Skinny delivers Jo a crossword with clues relating to the museum's exhibits. The user must help Jo solve the crossword by touring the museum for answers. Once the crossword is completed, Jo unscrambles highlighted letters to reveal the address of the sabotaged site.

  • Impressionist art
  • Modern art & Photography

Lockpicking[edit]

Jo arrives at the sabotaged site with the door locked. Each lock is in the shape of an equilateral triangle, consisting of four identical smaller triangles. These smaller triangles contain a different math problem on all three sides that the user must solve. These problems involve adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing two numbers. Once all the problems are solved, the user has to rotate and move around the pieces so that touching sides equal the same number. Two locks must be picked on each mission.

Grammar[edit]

This activity is similar to the Cemetery activity from JumpStart Adventures 4th Grade: Haunted Island. Jo uses glasses given to her in the first mission to read the thoughts of Dr. X's henchmen. The user must fill in the missing portions of their thoughts by selecting a word that matches the part of speech asked for. Once all the words are filled in, Jo notes down all the things she will need to safely reach the bomb. Jo proceeds to skateboard around Hooverville in search of these items.

The Dungeon[edit]

Sometimes, while travelling between locations, the user must play a side-scrolling skateboard minigame, where the goal is to avoid getting caught by Dr. X's henchmen. Should the user fail, the henchmen throw Jo in a dungeon. To escape, the user must stack boxes (using the rules of Tower of Hanoi) to reach a broken window.

The Squishy Juice Bar[edit]

At the juice bar, Jo must speak with her friend Bernie, an undercover newspaper reporter posing as the bartender. He gives her one of the items she needs in exchange for helping mix up drinks. In the activity, the user is given a recipe to follow, as well as 6 beakers of varying size. Each beaker is labelled with a different fraction. They must be used to collect the correct amount of each juice stated in the recipe. On harder difficulties, the user must also pour the correct fraction of mixed drinks to satisfy customer orders.

Jimmy's Junkyard[edit]

The junkyard at the edge of town is run by a shady figure known as Jimmy 'the Shadow.' He gives Jo one of the items she needs in exchange for helping compact pieces of junk. The activity is essentially a Tangram puzzle, where the user must arrange the seven tangram pieces into the desired shape, given by a diagram on the top-right corner of the screen.

The Boulder Canyon Mine Shaft[edit]

The Boulder Canyon mine shaft is operated by Maggie Mead, a ranger studying artefacts from the mine. However, she is unwilling to personally enter the mines because she's afraid of the dark. She gives Jo an item in exchange for going down the mine shaft and retrieving the objects she needs. The mines are divided into three layers, Maggie needing one artefact from each layer. The top layer contains artefacts from colonial America and the American Revolution. The middle layer consists of artefacts from Native American history. The bottom layer contains artefacts relating to geology and Earth science.

Bomb disarming[edit]

Once Jo has all the items she needs, she returns to the sabotaged site and safely retrieves the bomb. In the activity to disarm the bomb, the user must navigate an android around a circuit attached to several batteries. Each battery is labelled with a different decimal number. The goal of the activity is to switch the batteries on and off, such that the sum of all the batteries switched on equals a target number given on screen. There are also defence androids chasing the player down. Should they make contact with the player, the bomb immediately detonates. Jo then appears on screen, breaking the fourth wall, and resetting the game.

Once the bomb has been disarmed, Jo returns to the museum and gets a new crossword, starting the next mission. At the end of the final mission, Jo is warned that Dr. X is planning on blowing up Boulder Canyon Dam (modelled upon the Hoover Dam), destroying all of Hooverville in the process. Jo manages to divert the water just before the bomb blows up, but discovers Dr. X has mysteriously disappeared.
