How Do You Use A Kensington Lock

• As you turn the dial CW with tension on the shackle, you will come to the first clockwise stopping point where you can't turn the dial anymore. Make note of where it stops. OK; stupid question #647:
A bud of mine at the office bought himself a brand new Powerbook G4 1.25Ghz. He didn't have a lock for it, so I dug thru my stash of misc stuff and found a lock and ONE key for it. Gave it to him, and all's well.. until today.
He comes to me panicked - he's LOST the key, and the laptop is attached to his desk with the lock. I have dug thru all my stuff and can't find the 2nd key.. and according to Kensington's site without the code on the key, you can't get a replacement key made.
I've thumped him for just having the key loose in his pocket and not on a keyring of any kind - but that doesn't change the fact that his laptop (his personal laptop, by the way) is now a desktop at work. Heh heh.. anyone ever removed one of these things without scarring the machine? Or is a locksmith the best bet in this case?
